When Might You Need To Drain Your Boiler?

Draining a boiler is typically required for:

  • Removing sludge or debris
  • Replacing parts
  • Relocating the system
  • Preparing for extended periods of non-use

Preparation Before Draining

Ensure you have the following items ready:

  • A hosepipe
  • A bucket or suitable container
  • Adjustable spanner

Additionally, switch off the boiler and let it cool before beginning.

Steps To Drain Your Boiler

  1. Turn Off The Boiler
Switch off the boiler and disconnect it from the power supply for safety.
  2. Shut Off The Water Supply
Locate the main water supply valve and turn it off.
  3. Attach A Hose To The Drain Valve
Find the drain valve, typically located at the bottom of the boiler. Securely attach a hosepipe and place the other end in a drain or bucket.
  4. Open The Drain Valve
Use an adjustable spanner to open the drain valve. Water will start flowing out.
  5. Bleed The Radiators
To speed up the draining process, open the bleed valves on your radiators. This releases trapped air and allows water to flow out more efficiently.
  6. Wait Until Fully Drained
Allow all the water to drain completely. Check the flow to ensure no water is left in the system.
  7. Close The Valves
Once drained, close the drain valve and radiator bleed valves.
  8. Reconnect The System
Reconnect the water supply and follow re-pressurising steps (as detailed in our other guide).

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Forgetting to turn off the power supply
  • Leaving the drain valve open after reconnecting the system
  • Using tools that may damage components
